Importance of being a Transformational Leader

When you think about the word ‘leader’, you picture him/her as a person who leads an organization. But real leadership goes far beyond these thoughts. A real leader is one with assorted traits and capabilities creating distinct advantage for the organization.  A person with ability to inspire and motivate a team or organization, to exude passion, intelligence and charisma is called a “transformational leader”. This style of leadership was conceptualized as “transformational leadership” by James MacGregor Burns in 1978.

A transformational leader has the ability to inspire, encourage and enhance interest and passion in the people they lead. He articulates his vision clearly but walks the talk to demonstrate what he expects. As Henry A. Kissinger once said, “The task of the leader is to get his people from where they are to where they have not been”. They bring about prized and positive transformations within the team and organization. They empower and grow the people they lead and challenge them to outshine and become leaders themselves.

A transformational leader understands his people’s strength and spends time with the team to understand the potentials within those he leads. He clearly understands each person’s weaknesses and steers the team in the right direction to avoid any failures or pitfalls. Transformational leaders show compassion, expertise and commitment in everything they do. They celebrate victories together and show genuine appreciation for the team’s progress.

It is now time to say goodbye to the old fashioned commanding style of leadership and enter the era of transformational leadership. “There is no limit to the potential of an organization that recruits good people, raises them up as leaders and continually develops them.”- John C Maxwell.  Inspire, motivate and awaken your people in positive and constructive way and challenge them to strive for a steady progress. Transformational leadership transforms people as well as organizations for breakthrough results.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs can be remembered as a “Transformational Leader “. Steve Jobs had a vision to change the world in terms of technological advancement. He inspired and stimulated people to be creative and innovative. He set high expectations, recruited the right people and motivated people to think different.  He was admired and respected worldwide by generations. He was the  role model in innovation and entrepreneurship.
